wordsthatfit: Black Superhero History Month, Day 28: Monet St. Croix.Back in the heady—and foil-embossed cover—days of 1994, two new teams of teen heroes emerged from two different companies. At Image Comics, there were the superpowered kids of Gen-13, descendants of genetically altered parents. Meanwhile, at Marvel, there came a new batch of adolescent mutants in the venerated X-Men franchise, known, naturally, as Generation X. What I found, and still find, interesting is that both teams had members who, in a word, were perfect. Both Gen-13’s Caitlin Fairchild and the X-Men’s Monet St. Croix possessed superhuman strength and stamina, invulnerability, superhuman agility, reflexes, intellect and unparalleled beauty (of course). While Fairchild could also increase her density, Monet (aka “M”) had a litany of other powers including: telepathy, heightened senses, night and telescopic vision, a healing factor and supersonic flight. It took a long time for me to warm up to Monet—she had cool abilities but coming from an insanely wealthy background made her a touch too aristocratic—but her relationship with fellow mutant Synch really showed a softer side to her character. She’s currently a member of the X-Factor Investigations detective agency, having come a very long way from her Generation X origins.
